FORCE is currently helping schools, colleges and residential complexes in NCR with the designing, implementation, monitoring and maintenance of rainwater harvesting in their areas. All these are being done in FORCE’s P-4 Partnership format.
Based on the catchment area (Roof Top, Paved or Green), direction of flow of water on the road surface, slope of the land, gradient and availability of construction space, optimum number and location of sites have been identified for construction of rainwater harvesting structures. All the structures are situated at / near Water collection points where the availability of rainwater runoff is likely to be high.
At this water collection point, a collection chamber with a bypass mechanism (to prevent first flush runoff and basal runoff which may have contaminants from entering the structure) will be made. Runoff collected in the Collection Chamber will be diverted to the Rainwater Harvesting structure with a 6-8 inch pipe. A wire mesh will also be put at the mouth of the connecting pipe to prevent any floating debris from getting into the RAINWATER HARVESTING structure.
The above runoff collection system has been designed to ensure that no contaminants (apart from silt) get into the rainwater harvesting system. The communities will also ensure that no chemical contaminants are thrown on the surfaces that form part of the rainwater harvesting catchment area.
Each rainwater harvesting structure will comprise of a Recharge trench with a recharge well. The Recharge Trench will be divided into two portions – a desilting chamber and a Filtration Chamber. Water from the collection Chamber will first flow into the Desilting chamber. Here, the mud and silt will settle at the base of the chamber while the relatively clean water will flow into the Filtration Chamber. The Filtration chamber will have a Filter bed of 1 meter depth made from 3 layers of filter media – boulders, gravel and pea gravel. This filter bed will further trap silt. The pure water will then enter the recharge well i.e. the bore well which will take this up to the level of the active aquifer in the area.
