Vasant Kunj is a locality in South West district of Delhi. Due to the overexploitation of the groundwater reserves (250% development) the water table has been depleting at an alarming rate of more than 1 meter a year. To protect the groundwater reserves from further depletion, the Central Groundwater Authority (CGWA) notified this district in 2000.  i.e. no bore wells could be made without permission.

Vasant Kunj also lies at the tail end of the treated water distribution network of Delhi Jal Board. As a result, the area frequently suffers from a severe shortfall in water supply. Water tankers (private and DJB) are frequently called upon by residents to fulfill even their basic water requirements. Till January 2008, 72% of the water supply in Vasant Kunj was from tube wells located in this area. The water table stands at 60 m. below ground level.

It is very important therefore, to do Rainwater Harvesting in this area so that the groundwater levels are maintained. Recharge trenches with bore wells which join the aquifer at / below the water table will do effective recharge to groundwater.

C-5, Vasant Kunj is a planned colony with a well laid out storm water drainage network that is functional at most points. Based on the direction of flow of water in the storm water drains, flow on the road surface and availability of construction space, two sites have been identified for construction of rainwater harvesting structures. Both are situated at points along the storm water drain and the roads where the availability of rainwater runoff is likely to be high.

Recharge trenches of size 4 m X 1.7 m X 2.5 m with recharge wells of depth 53 m each for groundwater recharge will be constructed at both these sites.
