Expert Advice:                   CENTRAL GROUNDWATER BOARD

Government Support:          DELHI JAL BOARD

Defence Colony is a locality in Central district of Delhi. Due to the overexploitation of the groundwater reserves the water table has been depleting at a rate of about 1 meter a year. Most of the houses in the area have installed tube wells to augment the water supply from Delhi Jal Board.

It is very important therefore, to do Rainwater Harvesting in this area so that the groundwater levels are maintained. Recharge trenches with bore wells which join the aquifer at the water table will do effective recharge to groundwater.

Defence Colony is a planned colony with a well laid out storm water drainage network that is functional at most points. Based on the direction of flow of water in the storm water drains, flow on the road surface and availability of construction space, many sites have been identified for construction of rainwater harvesting structures. Of these, 4 sites have been selected for the current project.
