The NSWMP is currently developing an overarching strategic framework for waste management in Egypt. Complementing this measure an in-depth strategic framework for hazardous waste will be added to tackle the specific requirements in this area. Additionally, the NSWMP will develop legal instruments for hazardous waste and will implement a pilot project for a collection system for one specific hazardous waste stream.
Egypt has launched a National Solid Waste Management Programme (NSWMP), with the support of EU/German development partners, for the sustainable development of the Solid Waste management (SWM) sector in Egypt. The NSWMP is designed as a national sector reform program with technical assistance and supporting investments. The technical part of the program is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO of the Swiss Confederation.
